DIOCESE OF CHICHESTER MOTHERS’ UNION

 Prayers for September

           pears

Dear Lord, I don’t know how to approach you.

Pilgrim, come to me with thankfulness.

 Thank you today Lord, for memories  . . . . . for people  . . . . .

I am grateful Lord.

Come to me in humility, Pilgrim.

 Lord I am not worthy but  . . . . .

 Come to me Pilgrim, for peace  . . . . .

With your peace Lord, I feel calm.

I would be quiet and pray for peace in your beautiful world.

With your peace in my heart I’m able to give peace to others.

 Where are you Pilgrim?

Lord I am at the bottom of the rock preparing to climb towards you.

Be my guide.       Be my strength.

I approach you with faith.    Amen.

We remember St. Matthew on Sept;  21st.

 SAINT1

I have been watching this teacher called Jesus.  He always seems so quietly calm and interested in everyone.  He even stops and talks with me and I’m a tax collector, hated and despised by my fellow Jews !

Here he comes now, with a few of his friends.  What does he want ?  For me to follow him ?  NOW Jesus ?  I can’t leave my position, the tax records, my income.  Yet, I find myself doing just that; putting down my pen, pushing away the stool, shutting the books, compelled by love to follow.

Lord God, you know me through and through as you knew Matthew.  Thankyou for his example and for his gospel.  Forgive me if I am more like Nichodemas who followed you “ in secret “, and allow me courage when it is time to tell out my faith and confess you before others.

Through Jesus, your Son who was faithful to the end.  Amen.

“Let us praise God at the beginning and at the end of time

Who ever seeks him out he will not deny of refuse. “

From the Black book of Carmathen.

“ Seek ye first the kingdom of God  . . . . . “

“Who ever knocks  . . . . . “.

bookThe Black Book of Carmathen is called because of the colour of its binding and its connection with the Priory of St. John the Evangelist.  It is thought to be the earliest surviving manuscript written entirely in Welsh and dates from the middle of C 13.  Written in Cyrnric  [Welsh ] metrical poetry it is essentially a poetry manuscript mainly of poems of religious subjects.

On 28th of September the Diocese prays for the Parish of St. Asaph in South Wales

Little is known of St. Asaph whose feast day is in May.

The Welsh call the town of Asaph “ Llanelwy “,  -- the church on the river Elwy.  St Mungo the founder of the church and monastery prayed frequently in the ice-cold river and suffered severely under this discipline.  One day he sent the boy, Asaph, to fetch a hot faggot to warm himself.  Asaph brought live coals in his apron.  This miracle was remembered, and the reason given why St. Asaph was consecrated Bishop in 573.

Lord God, we pray for those who have dedicated themselves to live apart from the world and worship you continuously.  May they have steadfastness and faith to please you in this way.  May we also find time to take ourselves from the world to be with you in  prayer.  Thankyou for different ways of worshiping you, our Lord and God,   Amen.

A Grace .

We bless thee Lord, for this our food

For life and health and every good

May we, more blessed than we deserve

Live less for self and more to serve.    Amen.

And to finish a blessing which my priest – friend in America uses at the end of each service ;-“ Friends, life is short and we do not have much time to gladden the hearts of those who travel with us, so be swift to love and make haste to be kind and go in peace to love and serve the Lord.  "
