Sending Love at Christmas

Mothers’ Union members reach out to all and at any time within their communities, so it is not a surprise to find us in Prisons and the Immigration Removal Centre (IRC) at Gatwick. We currently send Christmas cards into both our Prisons and the IRC. For all prisoners and those in the IRC Christmas can be a very lonely and dark time.

Conditions for the detainees in the IRC vary enormously - from having everything they need with them to nothing - so members fundraise and supply socks for Christmas for every detainee.  We know that while some won’t need the socks, it is always good to know you are not forgotten, especially at this time of year.

The best gift we can give the detainees and prisoners through these cards and socks is for them to know they are not alone but in the company of others who do care.
